Endoscopic dacrocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a procedure performed for patients with a condition called “epiphora.” Epiphora is excessive tearing from the eyes. This can be caused either by overproduction of tears or by inadequate eye drainage. When there is inadequate drainage of tears due to anatomical blockage, a DCR can be performed to relieve the blockage and restore drainage. The evaluation and management of epiphora often involves both an ophthalmologist (a physician who specializes in treatment of the eyes) and otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat physician).
A DCR can be performed using either an external or endoscopic approach, depending on the particular case and surgeon’s preference. The procedure has traditionally been performed using an external approach, which involves making a small incision near the eyelid. Currently, the procedure can be performed using endoscopic techniques through the nostril without any external incisions and with equal or better success rates.
