The pituitary gland is a gland in the brain near the base of the skull that regulates many important hormones responsible for daily bodily functions. Tumors can develop from this gland, causing a wide variety of symptoms including:
- Headaches
- Vision changes
- Dizziness
- Hormonal changes
These tumors are usually discovered as a result of a CT or MRI scan.
Depending on the particular case and type of tumor, treatment options can include:
- Observation
- Medication
- Surgical removal of the tumor
If surgery is required, most of these tumors may be removed endoscopically through the nose. Using this approach, ear, nose and throat physicians (otolaryngologists) and neurosurgeons work together. The base of the skull is opened, the tumor removed, and the skull base reconstructed. The patient is in the hospital for a few days before going home. This endoscopic approach has several advantages including not having to make facial incisions or invasive craniotomies, where part of the skull is removed to expose the brain.
