Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is generally intended for people with chronic sinus problems (chronic sinusitis) that do not respond to medical therapy. It is important for a diagnosis of chronic sinusitis to be based on an assessment from your ENT physician because other problems may cause similar symptoms, and it is important to completely understand the underlying cause of the symptoms in order to find an effective solution.
When medications are not effective, surgery is an option. Surgery may also help if symptoms return when treatments are stopped. There are other reasons that FESS is sometimes necessary, and you should discuss this with your ENT physician.
The physicians at Raleigh Capitol Sinus & Allergy Center will be happy to discuss whether or not sinus surgery is the right option for you.
